UJ’s Highly Cited Researchers

The quality of scientific research is important. However, researchers should also focus on the impact of their published research. Citation rate has become the most important criteria used internationally to indicate the importance of any research.

Many of researchers are currently following the impact points and number of citation on many research website such as Research Gate and Google Scholar. In some countries many researchers have formed citation clubs in order to increase their rates.

Although internationally citation rates have been taken into account when applying for a job, promotion or call for financial support, this dimension has not fully applied in Arab region; many researchers who have a great number of citations do not receive any financial or moral incentives in their own countries.

Ranking systems which is based on only citation rates may ignore the fact that the source of the large number of citations may come from a single research paper and perhaps this research paper could be a scientific review. Therefore, any ranking system should include the h-index. This indicator measures the impact of a researcher by giving him/her a numeric value indicating his/her mostly cited publications; if h-index is 10, this means that the researcher has 10 research papers with at least 10 citations. The researcher who doesn’t know his/her h-index is like a student who does not know his/her GPA.

It is obvious that this kind of ranking could be unfair for all researchers, especially who do not publish in English language. However, there is an urgent need to support researchers in various ways and to increase their citation rates, this action reflects positively on the university's reputation at international level.

The University of Jordan’s launch of UJ’s researchers ranking, which is based on h-index and number of citations is a leading step deserve all praise and appreciation.

How to Increase your Citation Rate? .... 15 Pieces of Advice

There is no doubt that publishing good research is one of the most important ways to get a high rate of citation. Given the importance of citation on the university rank, and the launch of UJ’s researchers ranking, there is a need to explain how to increase the citation rate:

1.      Self-Citation: Do not forget to cite your published research that is related to the current ongoing ones.

2.      Key-words: you should pay attention to the selection of keywords; to be expected words for researchers using search engines.

3.      Research Title: It is recommended to choose a title that includes common keywords for researchers, it is not recommended to choose a short or vague title or a question type of title. It is also recommended to repeat keywords in the title within the abstract.

4.      Researcher name and affiliation: you should use the same way of your name in all research papers; to make it easier for researchers in finding all your previous papers. You should use the same way of writing your contact information. Do not forget writing your department, faculty and the University of Jordan; many good research papers had been lost due to this issue.

5.      Easy access to full text: If other researchers find a full text of your research easily, your citation rates will be increased. If you publish in non-open access journals, you can upload pre-print or post-print version, after a review of the publisher copyright, on your academic website or Research Gate, this increases your citation rates. You can check publisher copyrights through Sherpa Romeo website: (www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo). This website shows if you can publish a pre-print copy, post-print copy or full text copy.

6.      Research Websites: Creating an account on Google Scholar or Research Gate increases citation rates. These kinds of websites especially Research Gate enable researchers to request a copy of your research, if it is not available for free or copyrights do not allow publication of a pre-print copy.

7.      Wikipedia: try to contribute in Wikipedia and put your research paper as a reference in related topics, this affects positively on your citation rates. Anyone can create an account on Wikipedia and edit published articles or create new ones.

8.      Choose the journal: The publication in high impact factor journals increases citation rates.

9.      Research Group: Published research by a research group, especially a group that includes researchers from various countries, has higher citation rates than research with a single researcher. If one of these researchers is well-known this can increase citation rates.

10.  Review Articles: review articles which address an important subject can sometimes have higher citation rates than original articles.

11.  Publish research information: publishing any information about your research such as photos, statistics and questionnaires increases researchers’ attention and citation rates.

12.  Number of research: the more you publish research, the more citation you will have. Do not forget to publish all results of your master's or doctoral thesis, although it doesn’t count for promotion purposes at the university but it usually gets a large number of citations.

13.  Number of references: There is a direct correlation between number of references and citation rates, especially if you have an account on research websites.

14.  Conferences and social media: Participation in scientific conferences and communication via social media give you the chance to market your research and increase citation rates.

15.  Colleagues’ Research: when you cite from your colleagues in your department, faculty, university, or regional universities, this will lead to increase your citation rates; there is a rule; if you cite me, you will be cited.
