The challenges posed by climate change, which is now having corresponding consequences in many parts of the world, show that a purely regional or local fight against climate change by a few, willing states is not sufficient. Rather, global cooperation is needed, forces must be bundled, and research and teaching must be brought together and intensified across borders.
The following project description shows one possibility how such a cooperation can look like and how the use of renewable energies (especially in connection with the provision of green hydrogen) can contribute to the mitigation of climate change. The expansion of the use of renewable energies is seen as an indispensable and essential instrument for achieving the defossilization of the global and national energy economy and thus the reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
The three cooperating universities are already distinguished by extensive courses and research projects on the topic of renewable energies. These include electricity generation from renewable energies, the use of renewable fuels, sustainable energy system modeling, the import and export of alternative energy sources (hydrogen, methanol, etc.) and the use of bioenergy. This project aims to combine the respective strengths of the project partners and thus generate added value for all partners involved.
Within the framework of a cooperation project "Renewable Energy Systems with 100% guaranteed power supply", a cooperation between the three partner universities involved (Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (PAUWES) Algeria; The University of Jordan) is to be established on both the research and teaching sides.
The measures, among others, are the following:
- Development and improvement of a new module on “Green Hydrogen" which is to be taught at the partner universities.
- Preparation of Bachelor's and Master's theses in cooperation as well as offering student exchange
- Train-the-trainer" workshops for staff (teaching staff) of the partner universities
- Organization of a conference in the MENA region
