Polytechnic Institute of Porto

With about 20.000 students in its eight schools, the Porto Polytechnic (IPP) is excellence in higher education and a space of ideas and results. IPP is a dynamo of cultural change, in the city, in the region and in the country. IPP ranks fourth among Portuguese higher education institutions and is the fifth in number of students.

The School of Engineering, ISEP, has been pioneering education and research in Engineering since 1852. ISEP has more than 6.000 students in total. As future engineers, ISEP's  students produce creative solutions for present or upcoming challenges, becoming agents of global progress. Each student is unique and ISEP's job is to channel their potential with the spirit of entrepreneurship, team work, out-of-box thinking and technical expertise, key competences for a successful international career. Along with renowned institutions, such as MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), ISEP is a member of the international consortium CDIO (Conceive - Design - Implement - Operate) and has more than a hundred partnerships within the European Space of Higher Education. ISEP uses Active Learning and Project-based Learning as a preferential way of learning.

The School of Engineering has extensive experience in lecturing programmes related to Renewable Energies as is the case of the MSc in Sustainable Energies. With the MSc in Sustainable Energies, ISEP trains engineers with specialized knowledge to plan and implementing sustainable strategies of energy production, distribution and management. The course mixes mechanical, electrical, chemical, geotechnical and civil engineering perspectives to ensure a comprehensive and integrated vision of energy. The programme is designed to meet international markets´ needs. It´s flexible framework focuses advanced knowledge surrounding technologies, renewable energy investments (solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, hydro, tidal), cogeneration and microgeneration, safe and efficient distribution networks, clean transport systems, rational consumption, heat recovery and energy certification. Recently, students developed studies on wind and solar energy systems; energy efficiency in buildings and public lighting; use of biodiesel in transports; power quality; among other projects conducted in corporate and research environments.

The R&D GILT - Games, Interaction and Learning Technologies is a structure, located in ISEP, focused on the analysis, design, development and dissemination of the scientific and technical knowledge in the areas of Serious Games, Person-Machine Interaction and Learning Technologies. GILT seeks to establish the basis for a systematic work on research and development, linking it with post-graduate activities, especially at Masters and PhD and through joint initiatives with other institutions, public or private, national or international.

The School of Education of the Porto Polytechnic has the stronghold of teacher training, but also of the training of educators, and social and cultural players in numerous areas - from languages to music, to sports. The School started in 1985, providing undergraduate degrees in primary education, as well as in-service teacher training programmes for teachers and educators. Later on it widened the range of its educational offer to other professionals, namely in the field of Social Education, Art and Cultural Heritage Management, and Translation and Interpretation of Portuguese Sign Language. With the consolidation of the European Higher Education Area, we updated our educational offer so as to include Professional and Vocational Masters. Our mission is teaching, education and social intervention. We train professionals in scientific, technical, art and pedagogical areas, never loosing sight of ethics and citizenship education. The diversity of our range of educational offer is geared towards the provision of services to the community. ESE is a school where education, culture, sports and citizenship converge in a single space of training and knowledge. Located in Campus 1 Asprela, one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, the School of Education offers eight degrees and 15 masters, as well as Post-secondary Specialisation Programmes and several open courses.
