The Hashemite University (HU) is named after the Jordanian Royal family — the Hashemite’s — and was established by a Royal Decree in June of 1991, over an area that spans more than 8.5 square kilometers (2100 Acres), located 25km north east of the capital Amman, near a crossing of major international highways, and next to the largest free trade zone in the country.
HU started with three (3) academic colleges in 1995, accepting about 600 students in its first year. Over the last 20 years, HU has expanded its academic and research profile to reach (17) faculties and two deanships with more than 300 laboratories in different colleges, all equipped with the latest technological equipment. Even more impressive is the university's increase in the number of admitted students; it is around 23,000 students enrolled in 60 undergraduate programs and 40 Master programs.
The university is currently on track to expand its infrastructure and number of academic and administrative buildings to match the expected increase in its capacity in the coming decade. In doing so, the university has set forth a goal to adopt renewable energy and sustainable development as guidelines to its expansion.
